Tulips and Thrones

This weekend we took a trip up to visit the Keukenhof Gardens with friends Nick and Jamie. We stayed in the town of Noordwijk am Zee and enjoyed some wonderful Dutch cuisine which included some awesome fried Dutch shrimp in a ginger and soy sauce. The gardens were spectacular!

On Saturday we visited our friends Erika and Joseph in Aachen. Joseph is a member of the fraternity which cares for the Dom (cathedral) in Aachen. We stopped for refreshment at the fraternity house before dinner. The house is a huge townhouse in the middle of Aachen with big event and dining halls and a fun Stuebchen, fully stocked with beer.

After the Dom closed, Joseph took us in and gave us a behind the scenes personalized tour. The Dom began as the church of Charlemagne and is his final resting place as well. We learned a little of the historical context at the time of initial construction and also about some of the architectural symbolism. As a special treat Brennan (and therefore Amber) got to sit on Charlemagne's throne. We also trekked up 100+ steps to enjoy the tower views. Aachen at night is beautiful and it was very cool to see the Governor's Palace from above. Thank you Joseph and Erika!
