Farm Trip & World Cup

Our first squash!

Patrick took a quick 3-day trip to Italy last week, and on Saturday Brennan and I decided to check out a local farm that I'd read about in the paper. There were lots of animals to pet, tons of kiddie tractors, tricycles and other vehicles to ride on, an outdoor playground and an indoor hay gym and corn pit. Brennan loved all the ride-on toys and it was hard to drag him away, despite the heat and the promise of a juice box (included in our 1.50e entrance fee.) It was a nice way to spend a Saturday morning and burn off some energy.

This afternoon Germany played Argentina in the World Cup, and we met up with the McLallens in downtown Heinsberg to catch the second half on the jumbotron. Our timing was perfect: we missed the afternoon thunderstorm but got there in time for the final 3 goals. It was pretty exciting and a very decisive win for Germany. The crowd threw beer in the air and blasted vuvuzelas with each goal, and a fire engine turned on it's siren to add to the mix. After the game the fire engine hosed down the crowd a little bit while we listened to "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," and then a big group of rowdy fans congregated in the main intersection with a huge flag and celebrated. We grabbed a table at a nearby ice cream cafe and watched the spectacle while eating. Now both Germany and the Netherlands are in the semi-finals so we are surrounded by lots of very happy neighbors!
