Horse Apples

Here are a few pics from around the house this weekend. Below are Patrick and Brennan taking a field trip during a bed-time story about the life cycle of the bean (thank you Wilbers!) to check out our cucumber sprouts.

We have been searching local gardening stores for different elements of the soil mixture for our garden, and have been having a bit of trouble finding it all. A Dutch store special ordered vermiculite for us and had a nice supply of peat moss, but they were out of guano and all of their soil mixes contained chemical fertilizer. A neighboring Dutch store provided natural manure, but we needed one more component. So, today Patrick and Brennan took a bucket and headed down the street to one of the horse owners in town to ask for some horse poop. Fortunately we walk our dogs by this house and frequently exchange "hallos" with the couple who live there, so they at least knew who Patrick was. And apparently it wasn't an odd request at all. We had to settle for somewhat fresh poop straight from the paddock, as the husband had just hauled most of it away in the wheelbarrow, but it will doo. ;)

Brennan and Rocky have an interesting relationship these days. They can't stay away from each other, even when they don't get along. Brennan runs around the house squealing for Rocky to chase him, which the poor dog does even though you can tell he's confused and maybe even a little alarmed. But he can't stop and he definitely doesn't play it cool and wait it out under the ottoman with Bexar. Sometimes they miscommunicate, like when Brennan chases Rocky to offer him a chew stick and Rocky prances off as if they are playing tag. Then Brennan bursts into tears of hurt feelings. They are working on perfecting their friendship though, and here is one of their sweeter moments.
