Spring Break

The day after the wedding we celebrated Elena's 1st birthday!  Here we are having a healthy breakfast in anticipation of the partying to come.

Kellan was the only well rested one of the bunch.

Happy birthday Elena!  Cristina and I have a long-standing bet regarding who would have taller children.  This bet pre-dates our kids, husbands, and any knowledge of baby growth patterns.  Regardless, our first children of the same sex were to be measured at a year and compared, with the winning parents treating the losing couple to dinner.  I married the tallest man I could find (6'5") but the numbers are in and Elena is taller than Isla was at one year.  I didn't stretch her out enough as a baby!

Brennan and Isla love a good party and they had lots of fun at Elena's.

Beautiful wedding flowers.

On Monday we headed to D.C., met Patrick after work and walked down to the tidal basin to check out the cherry blossoms.  Patrick had picked up some potbelly deli for our picnic dinner.

We took a picture in front of Patrick's office building before we headed home.

On Wednesday we took a trip out to the farm to run around a little.

Isla attended a short dance camp during spring break, and on Thursday we attended her recital.

She had so much fun and was very cute to watch.

We left right after her recital for a night of camping.  The only campsite open in Shenandoah National Park was Lewis Mountain, which is a small site and operates on a first come, first served basis.  We had a nice drive out there, but couldn't reach anyone on the phone to see if they were already full.  It turns out that they were.  We happened to spot someone packing up and jumped on their spot.  Whew!  We dumped some stuff out of the car to hold our spot and left them in peace while we went on a two mile walk/hike on the fire road.

It was perfect.  Lots of room to run around, play in the dirt, find good sticks, etc.

The mission ruins were our halfway point and turnaround.  We had a snack of granola bars and leftover pancakes.

We had some good help with pitching the tent.

Gnome on a stump.

The grilled hotdogs for dinner were so good, especially when the temperature started to drop.

And of course we roasted marshmallows.

It quickly got cold and we all snuggled into our sleeping bags, anticipating a cozy night's sleep.  Here is Brennan ready to hit the hay.

Isla all tucked in.

Mommy and Daddy, tired and ready to sleep.

But wait, isn't there one more...?  Is he ready for bed like the rest of us?

Who invited this maniac?? Oh. My. Goodness.  Kellan could NOT settle himself.  His usual routine is to roll around, talk to himself and twinkle his hair a little before falling asleep.  He could not figure out how to do this with four extra people around, and he got downright aggressive.  He will not twinkle his own hair if there is other hair to viciously yank (mine), and there was plenty of hitting, scratching and headbutting going on too.  He was technically sleeping in the double bag with Patrick and I, but we couldn't contain him and he was crawling all over the tent.  By this time it was freezing and we really needed to be covered up with the drawstrings pulled tight.  Kellan and I were up for hours.  He finally went to sleep, but at around 2am everyone woke up due to the cold and we all switched places to maximize our body heat.  I would estimate that I got about 3 hours of broken sleep that night.

Here we are, bright eyed and bushy tailed at a scenic overlook the next morning.  We did have a lot of fun and I'm really glad we went.  We just need to work on Kellan's tent etiquette before we go again.

We got home in time to mix up our garden box soil.

Happy little gardeners.
