I think we may have finally thawed out for good. Here is a little taste of Spring in our garden. My crocus and daffodils never made it due to the cold, but I had some brave tulips come through. Brennan and I put in some geraniums and impatiens last week while Patrick was in Norway, and this weekend we all added to the vegetable garden.
On the evening of April 30 we headed around the corner to the church in order to watch the town maypole go up. It was all set to go when we arrived, with a tractor waiting to do the pulling. The band came down the street, parading the rings with streamers, (sort of reminded me of a cake topper). These were placed on the Maibaum and, with the help of the tractor, up it went! It was pretty exciting and Brennan is still talking about it. We skipped what appeared to be a follow-up bbq and headed home for bedtime, but.... little did we know that April 30 is a HUGE party night! Apparently the traditional dancing with streamers around the maypole has been replaced in recent times with all night disco parties in order to "Dance in May." That's right: all night. So, our tiny town was hopping ALL NIGHT with the sounds of dance music, revelers heading to and from the party, and people driving by with their car stereos blasting. This, in a town where you are not supposed to mow your lawn on Sunday and you must have your garbage on the curb by 6pm the previous evening so as not to make late-night noise. I think the music from the official town party finally stopped around 8am, but the boom boxes from the tractorloads of young men delivering Maibaums to their girlfriends filled the gap. Happy May!
