Nuernberg, Germany

Two days after our return to Europe, we began our weeklong trip east. Still a little jetlagged, but with clean laundry, we made it to Nuernberg, Germany on our first day of travel. It was a long day in the car, but while in the States we had bought a travel DVD player for Brennan, and since we don't own a television it was definitely something new and exciting to keep him entertained for the last painful hour of driving. We stayed in a great, riverside apartment right in the center of town. Here are the view from our balcony, a few photos from our evening stroll, and Brennan at dinner.

Nuerenberg is beautiful, although most of the town has been reconstructed after having been destroyed during WWII. Thought to be one of the more "German" cities, it was the center of the Nazi movement and therefore heavily targeted. On Saturday we enjoyed the typical German breakfast of broetchen, meats and cheeses that was included with our apartment rental, and then headed out to explore for the morning. We climbed the hill to check out the view from the castle and stopped by the Saturday market for some fresh produce.

Before leaving town we stopped at the Nazi parade grounds and took the provided audio tour concerning the rise and fall of the Nazi party. It was interesting, to say the least, although we were a little distracted trying to keep Brennan in sight and relatively quiet. He did fall asleep in the car (yay!) and when he woke up we stopped for dinner at the best rest stop ever. Well, that's what we thought until we realized that in this part of Europe they are all that great! Just outside of Vienna, this place had a chef cooking up pasta dishes on the spot and a fabulous, and wonderfully clean, children's play corner. After dinner we made it the rest of the way to our apartment in Vienna.
