August

August was a busy month!  We spent the first two weeks in Arizona catching up with Aunt Sarah, Uncle Tim and cousin Chloe.  The kids love Chloe so much and were so happy to meet her.

We rented a house in Show Low to escape the heat of southern AZ.  We finally hit the jackpot of having all three kids asleep at the same time!

Uncle Patrick. =)

The Browns enjoying breakfast time on the back porch.

We loved the rental house, it was perfect.

S'mores time!

Chloe's first trip to the pool.

We tried to take a picture of the cousins, but Isla was feeling surly and Kellan was all over the place.  Brennan tried to hang on to him but Kellan is a force.

This is the best one out of approximately 700 photos from that shoot.  At least it seemed like 700.

Kellan always goes for the hair.

Our house had a playroom with an air hockey table and separate kids tv.

Playground time.

Isla had a destination birthday (Show Low) and we decorated for her the night before.

She was pretty excited about those cupcakes.

The birthday girl.  Can you really be 3 already??

The kids got to take a pony ride as part of the birthday extravaganza.

We also took a short hike to a beautiful overlook.

What's that?  Mommy wants a nice picture of us?  Ha!

I got one anyway.

The town was named after the results of a long-ago card game, and we finally found the statue commemorating it.

And we joined in, because we're mature like that.

Cupcake time.

Make a wish!  Happy 3rd birthday Isla, we love you!!!

We spent a morning golfing the two par 3 holes down by the clubhouse.  It was much more fun than I thought it was going to be.

Snack break.

Family photo shoot at the playground.

Brennan has been wanting to fish for a long time now, and it's been a recurring conversation topic with him.  He finally got his chance when we went down to the allegedly stocked pond to see if anything was biting.  Nothing was, but we had a great time.  Here is Uncle Tim giving some pointers.

Mamas and babies parked it in the shade to watch.

Patrick is rocking a random leftover 4th of July hat that he found in the house.

Uncle Tim thought we could do better, so he and Patrick took the kids out to a nearby lake to try again.  They stopped for a fishing license and didn't let the rain deter them.  They had one nibble that got away.  There was one other outing where lightening kept them in the car, but they were determined.

We tried this lake and heard that the fish were biting.

Success!  It may not have been the dinner that the men had hoped for, but it was pretty darn exciting for the kids.

Photos by the fire.  We discovered s'moreos on this trip, which was life-changing.  You take your basic s'more and add peanut butter and double stuffed oreos: wow!

Isla holding Chloe for the first time.

My boys.

Morning smiles.

Day two hitting the links.

Lunch on the green.

I've been experimenting with braids.  Isla gets a bit impatient, but I told her that one day she's going to want me to know how to do this and I need the practice!

Too close!

We went to sonic for dessert one night, which was a new experience for us.

Another scenic overlook.  This area of Arizona was really beautiful; lots of pines and fresh air.

Here is a selfie sampler platter.

This one was taken with the timer on my phone from the top of the car.  Pretty impressive!  We took a road trip to visit the Petrified Forest and part of historic Route 66.

Let's go find some tree fossils!

Doing a little archaeology and making Mommy proud.

We stopped by the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook along historic Route 66.  It was interesting in it's own right, but also because the Cozy Cone in the movie "Cars" was modeled after it.

Which they completely capitalize on.

Nice mohawk.

This family hike started out in the sunshine with Gilligan, the Skipper too... (a three hour tour.....)  Just kidding, we didn't get lost, but a storm did start to roll in and while it took the kids about an hour to hike in, we jogged out of there pretty swiftly to the sound of thunder, giving piggy back rides when needed.  We beat the storm by about a half hour; it sounded closer than it was.

Back at the ranch.

We stopped at the Desert Museum in Tucson on our way back to the Brown's.  It was 110 degrees so we probably spent more time in the air conditioned gift shop than actually viewing the animals, but we did see a porcupine, some large cats and the rear end of a bear.  There were signs everywhere warning about snakes, so that kept us on our toes.

Uncle Tim gave the kids a ride in his Jeep, and even let Brennan shift!

One last pool day.  It was so great to see the Browns and we were sad to leave!  I'm really glad that we had this time together to meet Chloe as a young baby and just relax together.

Back in VA and all tuckered out.

Cristina and Elena came over and brought a chemistry set!!  Cristina led a few experiments and kept us focused on the scientific method.  The kids loved the beakers and dropper, but the highlight for me was definitely the goggles.

I ran a 20k and my family came out to support me, thanks guys!  Having them cheer for me made me smile and gave me the extra energy I needed to power up that last hill.

I think they were proud of me, but it was hard to tell because they were so focused on the free pizza.

Brennan lost his first tooth!  Just in time for Kindergarten.  He was very happy and left it for the tooth fairy.

We ended August with a birthday celebration.  Happy birthday Dad/Grandpa, we love you!
